MEMPHIS MILANO AT SALONE DEL MOBILE

More than forty years after its foundation, Memphis Milano debuts at Salone del Mobile presenting the most iconic masterpieces of its collection

Milano, 16 April 2024 - Memphis Milano debuts after more than forty years after its foundation at Salone del Mobile from 16 to 21 April 2024, presenting forty among its timeless masterpieces from its everlasting catalogue collection of over 200 pieces ranging from furniture, glassware, ceramic accessories, lighting, carpets and textiles.

Following its acquisition by Italian Radical Design in 2022, the brand has experienced a period of remarkable enhancement of its heritage, thanks to the restyling of Memphis Milano Galleria in Largo Treves and to the Memphis Again exhibitions at La Triennale di Milano (2022) and at the Shanghai Modern Art Museum (2023).

Salone del Mobile 2024 therefore represents an unmissable occasion for Memphis Milano, a new moment of affirmation with its public and collectors, but also an opportunity to capture the attention of a wider and international audience interested in the brand's unique and revolutionary style.

For the exhibition concept and execution, Italian Radical Design has collaborated with the interdisciplinary architectural studio (AB)NORMAL, which has succeeded in integrating the three brands, Gufram, Meritalia and Memphis Milano, respecting their uniqueness and peculiar characteristics but also creating a different and iconic environment.

The room dedicated to Memphis is an immersive space completely covered and lined with the "Bacterio" pattern by Ettore Sottsass, with the exception of a diagonal wall covered in mirrors. This element recalls the "mirror boxes" present in many expressions of Italian radical architecture. Inside the space, corners of domestic environments are recreated. On its external façade, sliding LED strips reproduce Memphis phrases and statements, evoking the imagery of the 1980s.

The new path undertaken by Memphis Milano focuses on a strategy aimed at consolidating the brand's notoriety in the world, through careful work to enrich its historical archive. In-depth technical research has led to the modernisation of production, pursuing the objective of preserving the original aesthetics and updating crucial production aspects.

Memphis Milano's iconic pieces such as the Ettore Sottsass’ Carlton bookcase, Michele De Lucchi's Kristall coffee table and Peter Shire's Bel Air armchair are returning to homes all over the world, surpassing the status of collector's items and leaving museums.

About Memphis Milano

Memphis was born from a cultural movement initiated by Ettore Sottsass in 1981 with the intention of giving life to products he designed and to products designed by a group of young architects and designers with whom he interacted, among which Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini, Martine Bedin, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier and George Sowden.

Memphis was born as a lab for the development of new project ideas and soon became a cultural phenomenon. With Ettore Sottsass as the point of reference for the group, and with Barbara Radice as artistic director, the first collection was presented at Salone del Mobile in 1981. From the start, Memphis’ design has represented a new expressive concept that is tied to new shapes, new materials, new patterns, and that has redesigned living habits by revolutionizing their logic and conquering the design world.

Acquired by the Italian Radical Design group in 2022, Memphis continues to influence the imagination of the general public, from fashion to the film and television industry. The liberating spirit of Memphis is still a source of inspiration for many today.
